The BMF’s third and final Park Matinee in its “Music in the Park” series at the Divine Music Administration features tenor Warren Mok performing a wide range of art songs.
In both the East and West, music and literature are inextricably intertwined: texts inspire musical compositions, and music is the ideal vehicle for words, which makes the art song the most concise format. The piano is not only a partner to the voice, but expands the expressive palette and extends poetic sentiments. Mok is accompanied by Yu Chen in a selection of art songs in different languages from Europe and Asia: Hungarian composer Franz Liszt’s settings of Petrarch’s Sonnets in Italian, French chansons by Martini and Duparc, and Lieder by two composers representing the heightof German romanticism—Schubert and Schumann. Mok’s selection of Chinese art songs traverses ancient and modern; his final one, An Ode to Peking, pays special tribute to the BMF.
