Perhaps you’ve heard about a new jazz talent—of mixed Chinese and Icelandic heritage—by the name of Lin Bing, or Laufey. Perhaps you’ve watched her groundbreaking, genre-busting videos on TikTok and bilibili, or listened to her mesmerizing voice combined with cello or guitar. She is the granddaughter of legendary violin pedagogue Lin Yaoji and daughter of renowned Chinese violinist Lin Wei. Laufey received classical musical training from a young age; by 15, she was already a concerto soloist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. But her burgeoning teenage passion for jazz motivated her to combine her unique vocal talents with the cello, inventing a musical style with roots in such great 20th-century greats as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday yet remaining totally unique. Laufey prefers the label “modern jazz”—and she’s not only modern in style and interpretation. She rose to prominence in a truly contemporary way—first attracting the public eye in “Iceland’s Got Talent” and “The Voice Iceland”, then through Tiktok videos, a path entirely different from her forebears. Whether recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra in a crossover program or appearing in jazz festivals worldwide to packed houses, she has proven her mettle. Now she brings her brand of “modern jazz” to Beijing, joining hands with the superbly gifted conductor Yukuang Jin and the China Philharmonic Orchestra. This musical banquet of symphonic jazz follows Laufey’s graceful dance steps, unveiling a beautiful autumn romance for Beijing.
